Juan Jose is the first child of the family Sanchez Hernandez, his mother is a minor and his father has heart problems. They live in a village where most people work in the fields if they are even able to find a job. Juan Jose was born underweight because the mother did not have proper care during the pregnancy. During the first few months she was monitored by the health post in the community and was not gaining any weight.Normally the mother breast feeds the child to help with their nutrition but at the age of 11 months Juan Jose was sick with an infection and his mother was not able to feed him. It was necessary for him to transfer to the National Hospital in Antigua. In this hospital he was cured of his infection, but not the level of malnutrition that occurred due to it. The hospital referred him to the Casa Jackson to be rehabilitated nutritionally. He arrived on January 15, 2010 weighing a mere 11 lb (5 kg). His mother came along and now lives at the Casa Jackson also.
